Women Leading, Families Thriving: Fall Empowerment Gathering
When women are supported, whole families rise.
That is not a slogan. It is something we have watched happen, over and over, in the work of More Than A Smile Foundation’s Women & Family Empowerment program. This fall, we gathered to celebrate it.
About the Fall Gathering
Our fall empowerment gathering brought together mothers, daughters, grandmothers, and community leaders for a full day of workshops, conversation, and celebration. Women came from across Louisville — from different countries, different languages, different stages of life — and found common ground in the things that matter most.
The workshops covered health and wellness, economic opportunity, navigating systems as an immigrant or refugee woman, and building networks of support. But the most important thing that happened was harder to put on a schedule: women talking to each other. Sharing what they know. Asking for what they need. Offering what they have.
That exchange — honest, generous, and grounded in lived experience — is what the program is built around.
What Economic Empowerment Looks Like Here
For many of the women we serve, economic empowerment is not abstract. It is learning how to open a bank account. How to navigate a job application in a second language. How to start a small business when you have skills but not connections. How to advocate for yourself in a workplace that does not always see you clearly.
Our program meets women where they are. We do not assume a baseline. We start with what each woman brings — her experience, her goals, her constraints — and we build from there.
This fall, several women in the program shared updates on businesses they had started, certifications they had earned, and jobs they had landed since joining. The room celebrated every single one.
The Daughters in the Room
One of the things we pay attention to at these gatherings is the daughters. The girls who come with their mothers and sit in the back, or run around with the other kids, or quietly listen to the workshops from the corner.
They are watching. They are learning what it looks like for a woman to take up space, to ask questions, to be taken seriously. That modeling matters in ways that will not show up in any program report — but that will shape who they become.
More Than A Smile Foundation is committed to building that kind of intergenerational strength. When we invest in a mother, we invest in her children. When we invest in a daughter, we invest in the woman she will become.
If you want to support this program or partner with us on women’s empowerment work, we would love to hear from you.
