Smiles Beyond Borders: Our Work Does Not Stop at the City Limits

The families we serve in Louisville came from somewhere. Many of them came from East Africa — from Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, and beyond. They brought their languages, their food, their traditions, and their love with them. They also left people behind.

More Than A Smile Foundation has never believed that our work ends at the Louisville city limits. The Smiles Beyond Borders program is our commitment to that belief — a bridge between the communities our families came from and the community they are building here.

What Smiles Beyond Borders Does

Smiles Beyond Borders connects youth in Louisville with peers in East Africa through shared programming, sports exchanges, educational partnerships, and cultural exchange. The program is built on a simple idea: that the values driving our work here — belonging, opportunity, joy, and dignity — are not local values. They are human ones.

Through this program, Louisville youth have participated in virtual exchanges with young people in partner communities abroad. They have shared stories, competed in friendly matches, and learned about each other’s lives in ways that no classroom curriculum can replicate.

For youth who grew up in East Africa before coming to Louisville, the program is a way to stay connected to where they came from. For youth who were born here or arrived very young, it is a way to understand the roots their families carry.

Why This Matters

There is a particular kind of loneliness that comes with displacement. You leave a place, and the place keeps going without you. The cousins grow up. The neighborhood changes. The connection frays.

Smiles Beyond Borders does not fix that. But it honors it. It says: the place you came from matters. The people still there matter. And the young people here deserve to know that their story is part of a larger one.

It also matters for the communities abroad. When they see that the youth who left are thriving — that they are being supported, celebrated, and given opportunities — it sends a message of hope. And when Louisville youth show up with curiosity and respect for where their families came from, it builds something real.

Thank You to Our Global Partners

None of this work happens without the organizations and individuals who believe in it. To our partners in East Africa who have opened their communities to this exchange — thank you. To the funders who have supported this program — thank you. And to the young people on both sides of the ocean who show up with open hearts — you are the reason this exists.
