What the Annual International Cup Teaches Us About Community
Every year, I watch the Annual International Cup and I think: this is what we are trying to build everywhere.
Not just a tournament. Not just a sports event. A proof of concept.
Five hundred youth. Twenty-plus states. Soccer and basketball. Families in the stands. Food from a dozen cultures. Languages mixing. Children who have never met finding each other on the field and playing like they have known each other for years.
That is not an accident. That is what happens when you create the right conditions.
What the Cup Demonstrates
The Annual International Cup demonstrates something that is easy to say and hard to show: that immigrant and refugee youth are not a problem to be solved. They are a community to be celebrated.
These are young people who have navigated displacement, language barriers, new school systems, and the particular loneliness of being new somewhere. They have done it with resilience and grace that most people will never be asked to demonstrate.
And when you give them a field, a ball, and a crowd that is there for them — they shine.
What Funders and Partners Should Know
If you are a funder or a potential partner reading this, here is what I want you to understand about the International Cup:
It is not just a community event. It is a demonstration of organizational capacity. Running a tournament of this scale — coordinating teams from 20+ states, managing logistics, ensuring safety, creating a welcoming environment for hundreds of families — requires real infrastructure. More Than A Smile Foundation has built that infrastructure.
The Cup is also a pipeline. Young people who compete in the tournament become participants in our other programs. Families who attend become connected to our community. Volunteers who show up become long-term supporters.
Every dollar invested in the International Cup ripples outward.
The Leadership Lesson
Here is what I take away from the Cup every year: community is built through shared experience.
You cannot build belonging through a brochure. You cannot build trust through a website. You build it by showing up, over and over, in ways that matter to people.
The International Cup is one of those ways. Engagement Nights are another. The conference. The giveaway. The mentorship program. Each one is a moment of showing up — and each one builds something that lasts.
That is the work. And we are proud to be doing it.
