Back to School and Ready to Learn: 2026 Giveaway Recap
The first day of school is supposed to feel like a fresh start. A new backpack. New shoes. A sense of possibility walking through the door.
For many of the families we serve, that feeling is not guaranteed. Immigrant and refugee families navigating new systems, new languages, and tight budgets do not always have the margin to make sure every child is fully equipped when the school year begins. That gap is real. And it matters.
More Than A Smile Foundation’s Back to School Giveaway exists to close it.
What the Giveaway Looked Like
This year’s Back to School Giveaway reached hundreds of children across Louisville. Families came and left with backpacks filled with supplies — notebooks, pencils, folders, everything a child needs to show up ready. They left with new shoes. They left with the kind of confidence that comes from knowing you have what you need.
Volunteers showed up in force. Tables were stacked. Lines formed early. The energy was warm and generous and loud in the best way — children trying on shoes, parents checking backpack sizes, everyone moving through a space that felt less like a giveaway and more like a celebration.
Why This Program Matters
A backpack is a backpack. But what it represents is bigger.
When a child walks into school on the first day with everything their classmates have, they are not starting behind. They are not marked by what they lack. They can focus on learning, on making friends, on being a kid — instead of managing the quiet weight of not having enough.
For families who are still finding their footing in a new country, that matters enormously. It is one less thing to worry about. One more signal that this community sees them and is investing in their children.
The People Who Made It Happen
None of this happens without the people who show up.
To the volunteers who gave their Saturday to sort supplies, set up tables, and welcome families — thank you. To the donors and sponsors who funded the backpacks, the shoes, and the supplies — thank you. To the partner organizations who helped spread the word and connect families to the event — thank you.
And to the families who came: thank you for trusting us. We are honored to be part of your child’s school year.
We will be back next year. And we will be ready.
