The Annual International Cup Brought 500+ Youth Together

On a warm August weekend in Louisville, something remarkable happened. More than 500 young people from across the country — many of them immigrants and refugees, many of them carrying the weight of displacement and new beginnings — laced up their cleats, picked up a basketball, and played.

The Annual International Cup is not just a tournament. It is a statement. It says that these young people belong here. That their energy, their talent, and their joy are worth celebrating. That sport is one of the most powerful languages we have.

What the Tournament Looked Like

Teams traveled from more than 20 states to compete in both soccer and basketball. The fields and courts were alive from morning to evening — with coaches calling plays, families cheering from the sidelines, and young athletes pushing themselves to compete at their best.

The tournament featured youth of all ages, from elementary school players taking the field for the first time to older teens who have been competing in the Cup for years. Every bracket, every game, every final whistle mattered.

But the competition was only part of it.

More Than a Game

Between matches, families gathered. Food from a dozen different cultures filled the air. Languages mixed. Strangers became neighbors. Children who had never met found themselves laughing together on the sideline.

That is what More Than A Smile Foundation builds toward every year. Not just athletic achievement — though that matters — but the deeper experience of belonging. Of being seen. Of showing up in a city that is still learning to see you, and being celebrated anyway.

For many of the youth who compete, the International Cup is one of the highlights of their year. It is a moment when their identity is not something to navigate or explain — it is something to be proud of.

Thank You

None of this happens without the people who show up. To every volunteer who set up tables, ran brackets, and handed out water — thank you. To every sponsor and funder who believed this event was worth investing in — thank you. To every family who drove hours to be here — thank you.

And to every young person who competed: you are the reason we do this. See you next year.
