More Than a Smile is a grassroots nonprofit that uplifts immigrant, refugee, and low-income youth and families through mentorship, education, and holistic community support. We exist to bridge the gaps in access, belonging, and opportunity by providing the tools and trust families need to thrive.

Behind every smile is a story of displacement, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of belonging. The families we serve, including many immigrant families, come from war-torn regions, refugee camps, and journeys marked by uncertainty; yet they arrive with courage and hope. Many now live below the poverty line in Louisville, navigating a complex web of barriers that make daily life a challenge.
Language differences make it hard to advocate for their children at school or to communicate with doctors and employers. Limited access to reliable transportation isolates families from much-needed resources. Affordable housing is scarce, and healthcare systems are often overwhelming and unwelcoming.
For many youth, childhood is replaced by responsibility. They become interpreters for their parents at medical appointments, translators at job interviews, and advocates in school meetings. These young individuals embody the idea of 'more than a smile' as they balance homework with caregiving, often sacrificing their own needs to keep their families afloat.

We meet families where they are; whether that means sitting together in their living rooms, cheering beside them on the soccer field, or gathering in a local park for a wellness night. For those unable to come to us, our mobile 'walking office' brings resources directly to their neighborhoods, ensuring that help, hope, and human connection are never out of reach.
What makes our approach unique is that it’s built by people who have walked the same path, including those like Amina Shale, who have experienced the challenges of being an immigrant, refugee, or first-generation American. Every mentor, advocate, and coordinator within More Than a Smile carries lived experience that allows us to connect with empathy, listen deeply, and respond to the real needs of our community—not assumptions about them.
We understand the fear of navigating new systems, the exhaustion of translation, and the determination it takes to build stability from uncertainty. That shared experience allows us to serve our community more effectively, ensuring that we are a reliable source of support for all.

Our More Than A Smile Community Pantry provides essential supplies for immigrants and refugees, including staples like rice, flour, sugar, and salt. They also offer meat and seasonings, along with snacks, baby formula, and milk. Fresh produce and vegetables are available to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food, reflecting more than a smile in the community.

We are collecting various essential items for immigrants and refugees, such as jackets, shirts, pants, and socks. Additionally, we need shoes and sneakers, as well as hygiene kits that include soap, lotion, deodorant, pads, and toothpaste. Household essentials like detergent, dish soap, and bedsheets are also vital for those in need.

Assistance with LG&E (electric) and water bills is available for immigrants and refugees in Louisville. We also provide baby kits and supplies to support new families. Our community partner Somali Bantu Community in Kentucky offers help with paperwork and applications, ensuring connections to essential community resources.
